History

Newport is a small, mainly residential town, situated in an area of great natural beauty.

Newport stands at the gateway to the very scenic Slieve Felim Area, which is on the borders of Counties Limerick and Tipperary. It is very close to the Silvermines Mountains and is just a few miles from the Shannon River and Lough Derg, Keeper Hill, Doonane and Ballyhourigan woods, the famous scenic Clare Glens and the renowned Benedictine Abbey at Murroe.
The River Mulcair flows through the town centre and is intersected by the Cully River.

Newport enjoys a good level of prosperity, has a strong community base and is well served with educational and professional services. There are 2 secondary schools, 2 primary schools within the town, catering for up to 1,000 students. The Waller Family developed Newport mainly in the 18th Century, descendants of Cromwellian planters. It has many heritage sites and buildings from the 18th & 19th Centuries including pre-medieval cemeteries, Holy wells etc. and the ruin of Castlewaller. It was an important market town and sill maintains a market town ethos. In addition it has a rich tradition of Irish music, song, dance and drama and has many sporting activities, including hill walking and pony trekking.

In the 2002 census, 887 persons lived in the town - the population of the District Electoral Division was 1,641.
The Newport Local Area Development Plan 2003 indicates that the population of the town will continue to rise to 1,500 in the period 2003, while that of the hinterland (the D.E.D.) will grow to 1,750 by 2009.

The Local Authority (North Tipperary) planners envisage that in the year 2020 “Newport will be a successful community comprising of a high quality and safe physical environment, affordable housing to serve the needs of a growing and diverse market; a vibrant range of enterprises including shops and services; excellent educational, recreation, tourism and citizen support facilities, with a strong community spirit which binds together longstanding residents and newcomers. Newport will be a place, which local people will celebrate with pride and where rich traditions co-exist with progress.
